What to Do in Vegas Beyond the Casinos: Our Unexpected Family Getaway
Here’s the thing — I go to Vegas all the time. It’s basically my second home at this point, thanks to work. So when my family made the trip to Vegas, I didn’t think of it as a real vacation. For me, Vegas = quick trips, meetings, and maybe squeezing in a matcha or yummy lunch at a familiar spot before heading home.
But this trip? Totally different. We packed so many fun experiences into one weekend, tried things I’ve never made time for during work trips, and honestly? I left feeling like I’d just discovered a whole new side of the city.
If you’re planning your own Vegas trip — whether you're a regular or it’s your first time — here are the highlights from our family mini trip, with plenty of recs to steal:
✨ Our New Vegas Favorites- What to Do, Eat, and See ✨
1. Area15 — Immersive, Interactive, Totally Unexpected
If you haven’t heard of Area15 yet, think of it like Vegas’ creative playground — part art exhibit, part entertainment space, part immersive experience. It’s filled with interactive installations, crazy cool photo ops, retail spots, and bars, all under one massive neon-lit roof.
Some of the most popular attractions inside include Omega Mart (a trippy, mind-bending art-meets-grocery-store experience) and Wink World, which feels like stepping into a futuristic funhouse. But even just walking around Area15 is an experience on its own — there’s art, lights, music, and surprises at every corner.
Perfect for families with teens or adults who want something different from the usual casino scene.
2. Lazy Dog — Comfort Food with a Cozy, Family-Friendly Vibe
After a day of exploring, we headed to Lazy Dog, and it hit the spot. This restaurant has a little bit of everything: hearty comfort food, creative drinks, and plenty of options for picky eaters. Their menu ranges from burgers and pasta to stir fry and healthy bowls — so there’s seriously something for everyone.
We loved how laid-back it felt, especially with family in tow. And I can’t believe they were able to accomodate 26 people when I. called in 30 min prior! Plus, the cozy mountain lodge-inspired decor is such a fun contrast to the flashy Vegas energy outside.
3. LAVO Endless Weekend Brunch — Brunch Meets Vegas Energy
If you want to level up your brunch game, LAVO's Endless Weekend Brunch is where it’s at. Picture bottomless bacon, upbeat music, and elevated brunch classics — all with that signature Vegas energy. Not to mention- the beautiful interiors due to the recent remodeling. My favorite…the Polenta Blueberry Pancakes!
4. Q Karaoke — Private Rooms, Big Energy, and Endless Song Choices
I’ll be the first to admit — karaoke brings out everyone's personality. We headed to Q Karaoke, which offers private rooms, so you can sing your heart out with just your group (ideal for families or if you need to warm up your vocal confidence).
Their song selection is massive — everything from 90s throwbacks to current hits — and they offer food and drinks right to your room, so it’s easy to make a whole night of it. It was one of the most unexpectedly fun parts of the trip, and everyone left laughing.
5. Awakening — A Vegas Show with Next-Level Production
No Vegas trip feels complete without seeing a show, and Awakening was such a standout. This production brings together incredible costumes, over-the-top sets, acrobatics, and storytelling all in one. It’s one of those shows that’s visually stunning but still totally family-appropriate, making it great for a group of all ages.
The stage setup is insane — you feel fully immersed in the action, and the production value makes it a must-see, even for people who’ve done the classic Vegas shows before.
6. Bellagio Fountains — An Icon for a Reason
It might sound cliché, but watching the Bellagio Fountains never gets old. The music, the choreography, the lights — it’s still one of the most iconic (and free!) things to do on the Strip.
We caught a couple of shows while walking by, and seeing my family experience it for the first time made me appreciate it all over again. It’s one of those classic Vegas moments that feels just as magical every time.
7. Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens — Seasonal Displays, Total Wow Factor
Tucked inside the Bellagio, the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens change seasonally — and they never disappoint. The floral displays are massive, detailed, and completely over the top (in the best way).
We walked through during their latest theme, and the amount of work and creativity that goes into each setup is unreal. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and a nice break from the high-energy Vegas vibe outside. Plus, it’s indoors and free — perfect for escaping the heat. Don’t miss the gelato right behind the gardens!
I showed up thinking, “It’s just Vegas, I’m here all the time.” But this trip reminded me that even the places we visit constantly still have new things to offer — especially when you slow down, explore with family, and say yes to something different.
So whether it’s your first time in Vegas or your fiftieth, trust me — there’s always more to see, more to eat, and more to experience.
