The Mid-Year Reassessment: Are You Spending Your Time on What Matters Most?
Can you believe we’re already halfway through the year?(Well we’re actually a little further than that…I’m a little behind).
The months seem to fly by, and before we know it, we’ll be talking about the holidays and making plans for a new year. But before we get there, let’s pause for a moment.
The middle of the year is a great time to check in with yourself. Not to focus on everything you haven’t accomplished, but to ask a simple question:
Am I spending my time on the things that matter most to me?
Life gets busy. Work, family, errands, social plans, and all of the little things that fill our days can easily take over. Sometimes we get so caught up in what needs to get done that we forget to look at the bigger picture.
So, let's take a moment to reassess.
What Are My Highest Priorities in Life?
Before looking at how you spend your time, think about what matters most to you right now.
Maybe it’s your family. Maybe it’s your health, your career, your relationships, your creativity, or simply having more time for yourself.
Your priorities are personal, and they can change as your life changes.
Ask yourself:
What do I want more of in my life?
What do I not want to neglect?
What would I be happy I made time for at the end of this year?
Write down the things that come to mind. Sometimes seeing them on paper makes it easier to recognize what deserves more of your time.
How Am I Using My Free Time?
Now take an honest look at your free time.
What do you do when work is finished and your responsibilities are taken care of?
Maybe you watch TV, scroll on your phone, spend time with friends, exercise, work on a hobby, read, or simply relax.
And let's be clear, rest is not wasted time.
We all need time to do absolutely nothing. The goal isn't to make every free moment productive. It's to notice where your time is actually going.
Try paying attention to your free time for a few days. You might be surprised by what you notice.
Maybe something you thought took 20 minutes is actually taking an hour. Maybe you're spending your evenings doing things out of habit instead of doing things you genuinely enjoy.
You can't make a change until you know what's happening in the first place.
Does My Free Time Reflect What Matters Most?
Now comes the important question.
Look at your priorities and compare them to how you're spending your free time.
If your health is important to you, are you making time to take care of yourself?
If family is a priority, are you spending enough time with the people you love?
If your church or your faith is a priority, are you spending time in service?
If you want to grow in your career or pursue a hobby, are you giving those things some space in your week?
This isn't about being perfect. It's about noticing the difference between what we say matters and what we actually make time for.
Sometimes those two things match. Sometimes they don't.
And that's okay.
The good news is that you can always make a change.
It's Not Too Late to Make a Shift
Maybe the first half of the year didn't go as planned. Maybe your goals changed, life got hectic, or you simply lost track of where your time was going.
That's exactly why a mid-year reassessment can be helpful.
You don't need to completely change your life. Start with one small shift.
Put your phone down and take a walk. Call a friend. Make dinner with your family. Pick up the book you've been meaning to read. Give yourself an evening to simply rest. Reach out to someone who has been on your mind or do some service for the community (it doesn’t have to be big or time consuming).
The second half of the year doesn't have to be about doing more.
Maybe it's about making more room for the things you don't want to miss.
So, take a moment. Look at what matters to you. Look at where your time is going. Then ask yourself if the two still make sense together.
And if they don't, you have plenty of time to change course.
Here's to making the second half of the year a little more like the life you actually want for yourself.
